Missouri Wineries – Vineyards Directory

Another project that we will be refining. Missouri Wineries are coming back into flavor. The Missouri wineries are now growing at an “above average” growth rate. We will continue following these rising stars that might put Missouri up there with California’s well known Napa Valley; hopefully.

Wine production is not new to Missouri as it has been producing wine since 1837 or possibly even earlier. Missouri’s climate is excellent for wine production and with its average temperature creates the perfect cellaring of wine.

Before Prohibition, the state of Missouri was the second largest wine producing state in America

Apparently, it all started in the early 1800’s to the mid 1800’s by German immigrants followed later by Italian immigrants. Missouri was also the first area to be recognized as a federally designated American Viticulture Area, with Augusta AVA recognized on June 20, 1980. In the mid-19th century, Missouri’s state entomologist, Charles Riley, found that American rootstocks were resistant to a pest that had destroyed the grape crop in France. Charles ordered millions of Missouri rootstocks to France, to which their grape stock could be grafted. This event, Missouri and Charles Riley saved the French wine industry.

Grapes produced in Missouri by Missouri Wineries/Vineyards are: Baco noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Catawba, Cayuga, Chambourcin, Chardonel, Chardonnay, Chelois, Concord, Couderc noir, De Chaunac, Delaware, Diamond, Edelweiss, Malbec, Marechal Foch, Merlot, Muscati Canelli, New York Muscat, Canelli, New York Muscat, Norton (Missouri’s State Grape), Rayon d’Or, Riesling, Rougeon, Ruby Cabernet, Seyval blanc, St. Vincent, Touriga Francesa, Traminette, Valiant, Vidal blanc, Vignoles, Villard blanc, Villard noir, Vivant and Zinfandel.  An impressive list!  Wikipedia List of Grape Varieties

In 2009 there were 92 wineries established in the state of Missouri. We will continue to follow this topic and provide the latest about this new upcoming industry in Missouri – Missouri Wineries.

Why do we cover Missouri wineries/vineyards?  Wine is obviously an important part of dining to many.  We know that Missouri wineries have much to offer and that they are trying to overcome a negative image.  Few restaurants in the St Louis area even offer wines from Missouri on their menu.  One of our primary objectives is to help change the image that consumers have about Missouri wines.

Many think that Missouri wineries only offer sweet wines – NOT TRUE!  They actually offer a large variety of taste.  Missouri grows more than a dozen different grapes.  Many think that the wines from Missouri are inferior to California wines – NOT TRUE; there are many award winning wines from Missouri.  Visit their websites to read about what they offer.  Many St Louis consumers think that it is too far to drive to get to a good Missouri winery – NOT TRUE!  Chandler Hill Vineyards is located 20 minutes from Chesterfield, MO.  It offers a fantastic atmosphere, regular entertainment, a fabulous restaurant, great wines with a spectacular view all back with a historic background.  Get out and discover what Missouri wineries have to offer.  Support our own state.  Missouri was once the leading wine producing state.  Imagine what Missouri could accomplish if they had the support of just Missouri residents.
