Restaurants Downtown St Louis
A controversial, but historic city. History of St Louis dates back to 1673 when French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette traveled through the Mississippi River Valley. Five years later La Salle claimed the region on behalf of France as part of La Louisiane.
The city started back in 1764 when Pierre Laclede and Augste Chouteau named the city for Louis IX of France. After the Louisiana Purchase it became a major port on the Mississippi River. Later, in the late 19th century, St Louis became the 4th largest city in the United States. Shortly after the Louisiana Land Purchase
It seceded from St Louis County in March 1877 allowing it to become an independent city to limit it’s political boundaries. In 1904 it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and then it hosted the 1904 Summer Olympics.
The earliest European settlements in the area were built in Illinois County, also referred to as Upper Louisiana, during the period of 1690’s and early 1700’s at Cahokia, Kaskaskia and Fort de Chartres. Migrants fron the eastern French villages founded Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, which is located across the Mississippi River from Kaskaskia.
In early 1764 after France lost control of the area west of the Mississippi to the northern part of the Missouri River basin called the Louisiana was assumed by the Spanish as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1780 during the American Revolutionary War, St Louis was attached by the British forces made up mostly of Native American allies in the Battle of St Louis.
The population for St Louis peaked in 1950 with restructuring of industry, loss of jobs, postwar suburbanization and bad politics on both the city and state level, it began a decline that has continued modern times.
