From Taiwan to St. Louis: The Story of Boba Tea and Seven Places to Try It

Posted on September 23, 2026 By Elliot Hayes

A wide straw, a cold cup of tea, and a few chewy pearls at the bottom: boba tea turns a drink into an experience. You might call it bubble tea, pearl milk tea, or simply boba. Whatever name you use, it has grown from a Taiwanese specialty into a fixture of the American drink scene, with St. Louis shops offering everything from classic milk tea to fruit flavors and elaborate toppings.

If you have never tried it, the first sip can be a surprise. The tea may be creamy or refreshing, but the pearls give it a texture that coffee and soda cannot offer. That combination helps explain why people return—and why the menu keeps growing.

How bubble tea began

Bubble tea took shape in Taiwan during the 1980s. Tea shops were experimenting with chilled, shaken drinks, while tapioca pearls were already familiar in desserts. Bringing the two together produced the drink now recognized around the world. The precise origin remains disputed: multiple Taiwanese tea shops have been credited with the idea. Chun Shui Tang traces its version to adding tapioca pearls to tea in 1986 and introducing it as bubble tea the following year.

The name can cause confusion. “Bubble” originally referred to the foam formed when tea was shaken, though many customers now associate it with the pearls. Those familiar chewy pearls are made from tapioca starch. Today, a bubble tea order might contain traditional tapioca boba, a different topping, or no pearls at all.

The drink’s flexibility has helped it travel. A first timer can start with black milk tea and tapioca pearls; someone wanting something lighter can choose fruit tea. Sweetness, ice, and toppings often vary by shop. There is room to find a favorite without ordering the same cup twice.

Seven places for boba tea in the St. Louis area

These seven stops offer different ways into the local bubble tea scene. They are places to explore, rather than a ranking of drinks tasted for this article.

1. St. Louis Bubble Tea — Olive Boulevard

Start with the place that puts the city’s name on the cup. St. Louis Bubble Tea sits at 12865 Olive Boulevard, near Fee Fee Road, and offers boba alongside food. It is a practical choice when one person wants a drink and another wants a meal. For a first visit, a straightforward milk tea lets the contrast between the tea and the chewy pearls take center stage.

2. Sweetie Cup Thai Cafe — Valley Park

At 2961 Dougherty Ferry Road, Sweetie Cup Thai Cafe offers an easy way to make boba part of lunch or dinner. Its published menu lists boba milk tea in flavors including honeydew, mango, strawberry, green tea, milk tea, and watermelon. The restaurant also serves Thai tea and a full Thai food menu, so this stop makes sense when the craving for a drink comes with an appetite. Menu prices and availability can change; check before ordering.

3. OME Café — Delmar Loop

OME Café brings bubble tea into a coffeehouse setting at 6600 Delmar Boulevard. The Delmar Loop describes it as a modern coffee and bubble tea shop, with coffee, boba, and fruit smoothies among its draws. That range makes OME a useful meeting spot when your group cannot agree on one kind of drink. It also gives you a reason to take your cup on a walk through the Loop.

4. Honey Bee Tea — Brentwood

Honey Bee Tea is a dedicated boba stop with a Brentwood location, as well as shops in Manchester and St. Charles. Its ordering site offers boba tea, while its broader drink lineup includes green tea and matcha options. If you already know you want bubble tea and would like a menu built around drinks, this is a good place to browse. Bring a friend, order different styles, and compare notes.

5. Cube Tea Studio — Olive Boulevard

For the person who enjoys studying a menu before making a decision, try Cube Tea Studio. Its Olive Boulevard location is at 8110 Olive Boulevard, with another shop on Manchester Road. Cube’s offerings extend well beyond basic milk tea, including fruit drinks and variations with toppings such as crystal boba. You can keep it classic or use the visit to try a combination you would not make at home.

6. Corner 17 — Delmar Loop

Corner 17, at 6623 Delmar Boulevard, gives you the option of pairing a boba drink with a full restaurant visit. The family-built restaurant serves Chinese dishes and has a boba barista role for its Delmar location. It is a good choice for anyone who wants the outing to be about dinner as much as the drink. With OME nearby, the Loop also makes an easy starting point for exploring more than one local menu.

7. Yum Bubble Tea — South County Center

South County has a dedicated option, too. Yum Bubble Tea operates at South County Center, making it a convenient stop during a shopping trip or an afternoon in the area. Its site highlights milk tea and mango boba among customer favorites. If the rest of this list takes you north or west, Yum rounds out the guide with a South County cup.

What to order first

If you are new to boba, begin with milk tea and tapioca pearls. It is the simplest way to understand the combination that made the drink famous. Then branch out: try a fruit tea when you want something bright, a Thai tea when you want a richer drink, or a shop’s specialty when you feel adventurous. If you are unsure whether a drink includes pearls, ask—“boba” on a menu does not always mean every cup comes with them.

St. Louis offers plenty of ways to follow your curiosity, from a quick cup on Olive Boulevard to a meal in Valley Park or an afternoon in the Delmar Loop. The best introduction may be the one closest to you. Pick a shop, choose a flavor, and see where the first wide-straw sip leads.
