The Hill, St Louis, MO

“The Hill” got its name from being the highest point of the city (Saint Louis). It was formerly named Saint Louis Hill. “The Hill” is home to many Italian-American residents, restaurants, bakeries and fine dining establishments. If you like historic, romantic, European, or classy atmosphere, The Hill has exactly what you appreciate. Most Italian Restaurants St Louis are located on The Hill.

From the green, white and red fire hydrants to the historic Catholic Church, Parish of Our Lady, The Hill has the feeling of Italy everywhere you look. Some of the best and most historic St Louis restaurants are located on The Hill.

Italians, primarily from northern Italy and Sicily immigrated and settled in the area in the late 1900’s attracted by jobs in plants located nearby to exploit deposits of clay discovered by immigrants in the 1830’s.

Well known baseball players, Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, Sr. grew on in the area. The homes that they grew up in are across the street from each other on Elizabeth Avenue.

I’ve been going to The Hill for 30+ years and I personally enjoy it today as much as I did in the beginning.

This blog is not intended to promote any particular restaurant or business, but is to help re-popularize the best kept secret in St Louis – The Hill.  Some of the best Italian restaurants St Louis are located on The Hill.

We will be reviewing each of the restaurants on The Hill and publishing reviews about our experiences over the next few months. We will determine the best St Louis restaurant (Italian), on The Hill, after those reviews are published and a survey is taken. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it! Not really, but I’m happy to contribute! We believe that The Hill is the most under-appreciated and under-utilized area in Saint Louis.
